Ubuntu Goes to Microsoft's Windows 10 Bash
Microsoft on Wednesday unwrapped a major open source coup for Canonical when it announced that Ubuntu Linux will be able to run on Windows 10.
Kevin Gallo, Microsoft's director of Windows developer platform, announced the development during a keynote address at Microsoft's Build 2016 conference in San Francisco.
The Linux Bash command-line tool will run natively within Windows 10. That has been possible using third-party tools for years, but a direct partnership with Canonical should offer developers more flexibility and convenience using Ubuntu binaries and tools directly, he said.
The feature does not involve running Ubuntu in a virtual machine or using cross-compiled tools. Windows 10 users can download the binaries from the Windows Store, Gallo added.
Work on the project began several months ago and is a continuation of an ongoing business partnership between Microsoft and Canonical, said Dustin Kirkland, Canonical's Ubuntu product and strategy team lead.
"Microsoft and Canonical have been business partners for some time now around Azure and technical partners around Juju, LXD and other open source technologies," he told LinuxInsider.

Beyond Bash

"This fascinating, unusual opportunity to bring Ubuntu to the Windows world was initiated by Microsoft, and we are continuing to work closely with Microsoft to ensure that the Ubuntu on Windows experience is everything that both of our rich developer communities expect," Kirkland added.
Microsoft's announcement included a brief live demonstration of Bash running on the Windows 10 desktop.
The notion of Bash on Ubuntu on Windows undersells what the development involves, said Kirkland. Bash is just the starting line.
"The entire world of command-line utilities available in the Ubuntu open source archives is fair game and freely installable. We're working with the Microsoft team to ensure test coverage and fix the remaining syscall translation issues during this current beta period," he said.
"The native availability of a full Ubuntu environment on Windows, without virtualization or emulation, is a milestone that defies convention and a gateway to fascinatingly unfamiliar territory," Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth said.
The journey to bring free software to the widest possible audience is a moment he could not have predicted. Canonical is delighted to stand behind Ubuntu for Windows and is committed to addressing the needs of Windows developers exploring Linux, he told LinuxInsider.

Push From Azure

The impetus for extending Ubuntu to run on Windows 10 comes from Microsoft's partnership with Canonical in bringing Ubuntu support on its Azure cloud services. Canonical has a responsibility to deliver Ubuntu, and the world of open source software, to any and all software developers, said Canonical's Kirkland.
"It's plain to see that we are in a heterogeneous world. Developers routinely have devices running Windows, Mac OS, Ubuntu, Android and many other operating systems. Together with Microsoft, we have just made the entire world of open source software available to Windows users around the world," he said.
There are more than 270 million Windows 10 installations in the world, and the OS is growing faster than any previous Windows release, Microsoft said in its comments announcing the Canonical pact.
That opens the door to growing a base of Linux users.
"Every one of those are now one Windows start command away from being Ubuntu users, too," Kirkland said.

No Losers

The Windows-Ubuntu partnership is about winning the hearts and minds of developers. A significant chunk of developers use Linux, and the partnership will allow them to do so on the same machine, according to Al Hilwa, a research program director at IDC Seattle.
"It appears to be one more partnership that is aimed at multiple technology fronts. It is a win-win for Linux and Windows users," he told LinuxInsider.
Ubuntu Users will have a simple, frictionless way to set up a Bash development environment on the Windows platforms. The beta technology is being made available via the Windows Insider program. Interested parties can register to become a Windows Insider and get more details from Microsoft.

Working Wonder

After downloading the required files from the Microsoft Store, Windows 10 users simply open the Windows Start menu and type "bash." That opens a cmd.exe console running Ubuntu's /bin/bash.
Within that console, users have full access to all of Ubuntu's user space, noted Kirkland. That includes access to apt, Wget, Python, Perl and such. It also includes most of the tens of thousands binary packages available in the Ubuntu archives.
The Ubuntu user space runs with native Ubuntu binaries directly in Windows. There is no container, virtual machine or hypervisor. The process runs bit for bit, checksum for checksum the Ubuntu ELF, or Executable Linking Format, binaries running directly in Windows.
Windows 10's Bash integration will be available with this summer's free Windows 10 Anniversary Update, according to Microsoft. Users will have to enable Windows 10's Developer Mode and add the feature in order to use it.
Google Fattens Up Entertainment Programming Search Results
Google will begin listing live air times for TV shows in its search results, Danial Alegre, president of global partnerships announced Wednesday in his keynote address at the National Association of Broadcasters trade show in Las Vegas.
This new feature will allow users to search for movies and TV shows. Results will show availability on broadcast and cable TV channels, as well as through the streaming and online rentals that Google already lists. Further, users can provide Google with their location and their cable or satellite service, if applicable, to help streamline the search results.
In addition to helping viewers find programs, Google's results could create some competition for the Amazon-owned Internet Movie Database, with Google providing cast information, plot summaries and even trailers.
Improvements to Google's DoubleClick ad platform will enable it to better target specific demographics on both live and on-demand TV, Alegre also said. He unveiled DoubleClick's Dynamic Ad Insertion, which is designed to create individual streams for specific viewers and thus deliver, according to the company, a better and more personalized viewing experience.

Guide to TV

Google's plan to list live TV programming times may appeal especially to millennials and younger TV viewers who have not experienced scanning TV listings in the newspaper, or in the venerable TV Guide. This is the same audience that has emerged as cord-cutters or cord-nevers as TV viewing habits change.
However, Google isn't exactly inventing, or even reinventing, the wheel.
"TV listings information has been available for a long time on websites such as TV Guide, so having them available on Google is just making the TV listings data even easier to get," said Roger Entner, principal analyst at Recon Analytics.
The impact on cord cutting might not be that great, as this information is so widely available, he told the E-Commerce Times.

Google's TV Play

The addition of more expansive program listings in search may be just the first step in a larger play for Google, which also provides video content. That could have a far greater impact on cord cutting, as many viewers shift toward watching TV on mobile devices.
Total digital media use nearly has tripled since 2010, and it has been up 35 percent since 2013, according to a recent comScore report, with smartphones having seen the most growth. Google Sites ranked as the No. 1 digital media property every month of 2015 -- and could be the first to surpass 250 million visitors.
"The exposure of alternative sources of content -- e.g., Google Play, YouTube -- over time might convince people that they can cut the cord and still watch their favorite programs," remarked Greg Sterling, vice president of strategy and insights at the Local Search Association.
Google may just be one option.
"A majority of people know where they can watch desired programs beyond cable TV already," Sterling told the E-Commerce Times.
The additional information could be a way for Google to have a greater connection with TV, though, and with it the potential to expand its advertising reach.
"Google can integrate the listings information with its other data sets," noted Recon Analytics' Entner. "Where it becomes especially interesting is that Google can now include the TV listings data in its data analytics efforts, as it seems to have licensed the information." Facebook Messenger Lets 50 Friends Get In on a Call
Facebook last week announced that it had rolled out group calling worldwide in its Messenger app. Members engaged in a group conversation can tap the phone icon on their screen to initiate a group
call. They can manage individual participants on the next screen.

Members of a group who miss the initial call can tap the phone icon in the group chat to join the call while it's in progress.
The feature allows up to 50 participants and is available only in the latest version of Messenger.

Move Over, Phone Carriers

The announcement likely will cause concern among telecommunications companies because "if you consider that social media's a form of asynchronous communication, then Facebook is the largest telecom on the planet, with about 1.3 billion subscribers," observed Michael Jude, program manager at Stratecast/Frost & Sullivan.
Facebook group calling
"Now add synchronous communications -- that is, communications in real time -- and Facebook's beginning to come into focus as the next paradigm of communications: async and sync combined," he told TechNewsWorld. "This could be a game changer."
Messaging apps Viber and Line already offer group calling for up to 200 people.
However, "Facebook is different -- it's a social media site with a huge following that now offers direct communication to groups of people," Jude said. "Viber and Line are much smaller pools of people and don't have the rich social media capabilities that Facebook does."
The calling feature is in software, so "if Facebook sees a need to expand the scope of the service, they could probably do it by flipping a switch," he noted.
Facebook stands to gain "a substantial portion of the millennial telecom business," Jude suggested.
Further, the company launched a beta of its Messenger Platform with bots and its Send/Receive API, as well as bots for the Messenger Platform. How those features will play into group calling remains to be seen.
Microsoft's new iOS keyboard might be a single-handed typist's dream
Microsoft's new iOS keyboard goes out to anyone who's ever dropped an iPhone in the toilet while trying to type with one hand (you know who you are). Called Word Flow, the new Windows Phone-esque keyboard lets you tap or swipe to type, and it also includes customizable, arc-shaped keyboards for ergonomic single-handed typing.

It's Microsoft's second iOS keyboard, coming in hot on the heels of the Hub keyboard that dropped a few weeks ago. Word Flow is the flashier of the two, with options for things like custom colors and photo backgrounds. The true draw, though, is the Arc Mode feature. It bends the entire keyboard into an elbow macaroni-shaped arc and relocates it to a single corner of the screen, like a luxury corner desk for your hard-working thumb.
If simpler single-handed typing appeals to you, then you'll be happy to hear that Word Flow is a free download and available from Apple starting today.
